DEALING WITH STRESS

If you or your loved ones are sick and tired of the hectic modern lifestyle, where you are constantly under pressure and feeling undermined and destabilized, then now is the time to take matters into your own hands. You have probably already tried magnesium, Hawthorn, Lemon balm, sports activities and maybe have even consulted a psychologist or psychiatrist.

By all means, keep doing anything that you feel is beneficial for you, yet consider that the method suggested below is a very simple 'routine', so simple that you will end up applying it without giving it a second thought. The method is inspired by Ayurveda for self-care and lasting well-being. Perform the exercises 'mindfully', in other words give your full attention to what you are doing. Thus directed, your thoughts will be stilled and you will achieve a peaceful state of mind, similar to what you would achieve through meditation. Share this method with your loved ones...some of these practices will definitely surprise them!

 IN THE MORNING :

– When you get up, clean your hands and wash your eyes, ears, nose, mouth and throat with warm, slightly salty water. Irrigate your nose and make sure to gargle. In doing so you are cleansing the senses, becoming more aware and heightening your perceptions.

– Once this washing ritual is complete, drink a bowl of pure warm water (ideally spring water, you can use hot water during the winter). Concentrate on the water irrigating and draining your body, resetting your biological clock.

– If you are free of time constraints (but do not skip this step if you are really in bad shape), practice a self-massage with Macadamia oil, blended with a few drops of essential Ylang Ylang or Lavender oil.

– Perform stretching exercises to work the joints, or a 15 minute yoga sun salutation routine. End your session with slow and purposeful meditaion.

– Take a shower whislt  imagining that you are eliminating all toxins and worries as the scented oils are washed from your skin.

– Make sure you have a balanced breakfast, based on fresh, organic produce. Drink a hot drink and avoid excitants (Lavender or Lemon Balm infusion, prefer Peppermint if you need to boost your energy).

DURING THE DAY :

– If you can, always take a few minutes break as soon you feel any emotional pressure whatsoever; have a warm drink (avoid tea and coffee), breath deeply and slowly, focusing your thoughts on the path of the air as it traverses passing your nostrils , from your bronchi to the alveoli and back out again.

– If you cannot take a break, you can still practice the breathing technique, whether you are standing or sitting. Make sure to keep your spinal column as straight as possible.

– Ideally, isolate yourself and take your lunch in silence (for about ten minutes) in order to concentrate on the food, flavours, and texture of your food… It usuall amazes people when you draw their attention to this requirement!

IN THE EVENING :

– When you get home sit comfortably in a quiet place and self-massage your skull for 5 minutes. Close your eyes and simply relax.

– Lie on a floor mat for 5 minutes withyour arms and legs slightly apart, keep your spine straight and tuck your chin in. (this is known as the 'shavasana' posture).

– These exercises  will keep you relaxed and rid you of your tensions so that you remain mentally available for your loved ones.

Start this method during a holiday period where you can practise it in its entirety. Self-massage, yoga and meditation are all techniques that require a learning curve so don't hesitate to sollicit advice from experienced practitioners. If you are intimidated by the learning curve, refuse to be discouraged and start with the simplest exercises; trust that it's easier than you might think. Even if time is an issue, with practice you will gain experience and should find that you can shorten the exercises and still experience their benefits.

Remember the most important thing: do everything mindfully, give your full attention to what you are doing, imprison and reject unwanted thoughts. Consider this method a meditation technique that is safe and efficient, that releases stress, and is a proven approach to rediscovering simple pleasures !
