Description

Papaver rhoeas, Papaveraceae family.

This annual plant, which is sometimes biennial, is a sometimes called a ‘harvest’ plant because it lives at the rhythm of the harvests, in this case the blueberry harvest.  Its bristly stem, up to 60 cm high, oozes a white sap when cut but does not contain morphine. Its red, four-petal flowers are emblematic. Dried poppy petals are traditionally used to promote the onset of sleep, calm palpitations, dry coughs or hoarse throats.  They contain mucilages, traces of an alkaloid, rheadine and anthocyanosides that colour herbal teas and syrups.
