Description

Mentha x piperita, Lamiaceae family.

This hybrid mint with a powerful peppery aroma and purple flowers is grown mainly for herbal remedies but can also be used in the kitchen, like for oriental tabbouleh. The peppermint leaf contains phenol acids, flavonoids, terpenes, tannins and mineral salts (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium). Peppermint is traditionally used for its digestive, antispasmodic, anti-nausea and anti-pruriginous properties. Interestingly, Peppermint is a tonic at high doses and a sedative at low doses. It has balancing properties in cases of stress or fatigue.

All mint plants roughly share similar properties.

Note that powerful mint aromas can inhibit homeopathic treatments.
