Linum usitatissimum, Linaceae family.

Tall, slender stems with narrow leaves and azure-blue flowers characterize this annual plant grown for its seeds and textile fibres. Linseed boasts a high oil content. The oil is rich in omega 3, proteins and mucilages. It is traditionally used to used to improve digestive health or relieve constipation. As a poultice, Flaxseed draws out infection while killing pain and can help in reducing joint inflammation

Preparation 

Macerate 20 g (2 tablespoons) of flax seeds in a liter of cold water for 12 hours (ideally overnight). Filter and drink a cup in the morning on an empty stomach then several times a day between meals, for 3 or 4 days. Store in a cool place. Prepare this maceration daily and discard what is left unfinished the same day, the same day. If the high omega 3 content is what you are after, then chew 1 teaspoon of flax seeds a day.

Properties and beneficial combinations

- to improve digestive health, regularise intestinal transit or relieve constipation, alternate with Mallow flower infusions. Add 2 g (1 teaspoon) per cup of water and infuse for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups daily.

Contraindicated in cases of  esophageal and small bowel obstruction. If symptoms persist after 3 days, seek advice from a physician.
