Description
Origanum vulgare, Lamiaceae family .
Also known as wild marjoram.
Often confused with garden Marjoram, oregano is a perennial plant with red blooms that dislikes siliceous soils. Its slightly hairy leaves top reddish stems and its small dark pink flowers are grouped into glomeruli. Oregano’s powerful scent stems from an abundance of essential oil which confers it with its amazing properties. Oregano is traditionally used to soothe intestinal spasms and bronchitis. Once upon a time its tops were heated and placed under a pad around the neck to relieve wry neck. It contains thymol, carvacrol and tannins.
In the kitchen, the powerful fragrance of Oregano is associated to pizzas, and it is also used for dyes.
