Description

Fœniculum vulgare var dulce, Apiaceae family.

Fennel is a flowering plant species in the carrot family. It is a hardy, perennial herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves which is cultivated as food and for medicinal use. Its fruit is traditionally used to stimulate digestion, soothe inflammation of the airways and encourage lactation during breastfeeding. Fennel is used in herbal teas intended to calm colic in infants. Its fruit contains a high concentration of essential oil rich in anethole, pectin, starch, vitamin C, provitamin A and lots of fibre.

Use & Special precautions

Preparation

2 g (1 teaspoon) per cup, crush lightly and brew for 10 min. Drink 3 times a day after meals. Will stimulate lactation during breastfeeding as well as calm colics in infants. 

Properties and beneficial combinations

- as a digestive stimulant: combine 2 g  of Fennel (1 large pinch) per cup of Melissa.

- to stimulate lactation during breastfeeding: 5 g (1 XL pinch) of stinging nettle per cup 2 g  of Fennel. Will strengthen and reminéralise the body.

Precautions for use:

Do not use more than 7g per day for 15 consecutive days. Not recommended during pregnancy and in cases of hormone-sensitive cancer. People with allergies to Apiaceae (carrots, parsnips, cilantro) should avoid this infusion. Check the Fennel botanical sheet on our blog for further information.
